Dr Alex Murdin is an artist who has been interested in intersections of rural culture and environmental politics throughout his career. To explore these themes further he set up the collaborative practice ruralrecreation.org.uk in 2007 which has been commissioned for a number of public projects across the UK. ruralrecreation has brought together unique combinations of artists, scientists, landscape designers and architects together with different communities of place and interest.
During lockdown in 2020 he started working on new eco-materialist perspectives of the geology and archaeology of Dartmoor National Park where he lives, wondering how to collaborate with past and future ancestors, stone and lichen. He has subsequently taken these interests further afield. lithicality.space shows this body of recent work and ideas.
